Words

Words, words, words, words, words, words, words, words, what is a word? Words, words, words, words, ramblings, words, uttering, words, groans, words, sayings, words, sweet nothings, words, grumblings, words, noise, words. Here is a word, be. Simply, be. Do you so often seek to gratify your own desires? Must you fill all of your moments with a task? Must you partake in every meal coupled with some form of entertainment? Must you so often move from one source of stimulus to the next? Or must you so often fantasize in your heart about meaningless things? About vulgar fantasies? Or plans for more wearisome tasks? My friend, my brother, Daniel. I want you to take this time for rest. I want you to take all of the noise in your mind and listen to it. I want you to consider all of the temptations which pull you sideways. I want you to consider all of the things that you do. Now that you have done so, tell me, are you satisfied? Are you proud? Are you happy? Are you fulfilled? Now I will respond to three answers. If you are indeed fulfilled by the work of your hands, tell me, Who made your hands? Think about that. If you answered no, then tell me, where does your satisfaction come from? Think about that. If you answered in the middle, then describe to me your thoughts and feelings.

Well, sometimes I feel good about the things that I do. Sometimes I do feel fulfilled by the work of my hands. Sometimes I do indeed feel proud of what I’ve accomplished. But the other side to feeling these things is the stark realization that all of the good I can do in my own right will only ever equate to the worth of that of a filthy rag. And when something truly good does come from me, that is only the perceived truth. When the real truth is that all of the good that truly comes from me really comes from Christ within me.

So then now that you’ve shared these things with me I must ask you, where does your fulfillment come from?

Hah, man… From the Lord.
